We Arrived

How odd that I am actually posting again!  We made it to Cortez, after about an 8-hour drive.  I guess we beat the holiday weekend traffic - whew!  But it was pretty tiring, all that sitting, so we didn't do much after getting set up except for checking out the surrounding area.

This morning we took off for Mesa Verde National Park.  As I said, we've been here before but it was many years ago.  We are thinking it was in the early 90's.  We packed water and water bottles, hats, and day packs then left every bit of it back at the trailer.  I had on my hiking shoes but Bob didn't even have that (again, back at the trailer).  To our credit, we remembered sunglasses lol!

It was really too hot to do any serious, or even not so serious, hiking. So I guess it didn't matter much that we forgot everything.  But Bob has lost enough hair and had enough spots frozen off his head that a hat would have been nice.

Anyway, we did check out some of the FASCINATING ruins left behind after the mysterious disappearance of the ancient Pueblo people who used to call this place home.

A ranger-guided tour shows just part of the community where they lived.  It's a 2.5 hour tour so since we forgot all our supplies we didn't undergo it and opted for the overlook instead.  We took this tour last time we were here and it is a must-do for anyone not having done it before.

Unfortunately, I had to shoot into the sun on some of these pictures.

See the grain storage areas in the side of the cliff.  All these dwellings are on the side of the cliffs.

See, no hat, no water lol!

We came back to the trailer and found that the A/C was keeping the Doods nice an cool.  However, there is a big shade tree so the test results aren't official yet.  But, so far, so good, and it looks hopeful.

Today is our anniversary 28 years for Bob & 29 for me (cuz I'm ahead of him) so we'll look for a restaurant to go out to dinner tonight.  We joke that I was "on the road" and collected an extra year but the truth is that last year I mistakingly told everyone we were married 28 years.  A few days after our anniversary Bob asked why I said it was 28 instead of 27 (I think he had to look it up to be sure) so I'm sticking with it!

PS - Congrats Beth on your extra 5 pound loss.  I can't wait to see you again!
